2009 Summer Knitting Goals Contest
It's that time of year again. While warmer temperatures have already moved in, the official start of Summer 2009 is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing, at least in the tiny world that revolves around me.
It's time to set some summer goals, more specifically, knitting goals.
You may remember some lofty goals from previous years. I'm a list maker. I'm lost without a list. I forget things like buns for the burgers without a list. I'm also a goal setter. I believe in putting a little pressure on myself, for without it I would end up spending most of every day with a good book, magazine, or movie, eating pizza- with paper plates.
New Year's resolutions aren't good enough for me. They're great for a week or two, but I need something more, like quarterly progress reports, so I set quarterly goals, even monthly and weekly at times, and I'm not just talking about knitting. Research has shown that people who make goals tend to be more productive and more successful, and those that actually write them down are even more so. I don't accomplish even half of what I set out to do, but with my slightly thought out goals I accomplish more than I ever would without them.
Here's where the fun comes in- incentives, it's like a Tupperware party, except you don't have to sell anything. You don't even have to achieve your goals, just set some, even one. This annual contest is specifically about summer knitting goals -what to you hope to knit by summer's end?- but don't let that limit you, feel free to add goals in any area of life that needs a little more intentional living.
I'm working on a few more goodies to add to the packages, but here's what we're starting off with-
Package #3-
- 1 skein of Suri Merino from Blue Sky Alpacas, in Cloud
- 1 copy of the Tie Sweater pattern
- 1 cute little bar of very special natural soap
- some form of chocolate
- a lovingly handcrafted notecard

- 1 copy of the Simple Raglan pattern

I'm working on my list (always!) and will post it early next week. Now it's your turn. Set a goal (or 2 or 3), post a list (with a link back here), leave a comment, then on to the knitting, and the living, one day at a time, one moment at a time. Enjoy it.
Happy knitting-
ali
***Extra details- leave a comment by midnight June 21st, the first day of summer. Each comment will get a number and I'll use a random number generator to pick the winners. If your number comes up, I'll head to your blog and check for your goals list, if I can't find one, I'll go to the next number (so don't forget to post!)... If you're blogless, what is wrong with you?! Totally kidding! I guess you'll just have to leave a list here in the comments, no biggee, that'll work.

Well, I won't use the Planned Knitting list I already have on my blog, cause it's about 30+ projects long! For summer's end I want to Finish at least 1 long standing UFO and 1 shawl per month of summer. So, 3 shawls and 1 to be determined UFO. I won't use the Kiri shawl UFO as one of the shawls though, that would be fudging! Also good in summer, Fudgecicles!! Hmm, wonder if I have any in the freezer?
chrisknits.blog-city.com
My goal is to finish 6 knitted lap "quilts" to give to a nursing home this Christmas. I have 3 done but now have to find an edging that will work for men and women. I guess the other part of this goal is to learn to crochet with proper tension. Wish me luck!!
Wel, I am not great with lists (tend to lose them :)
I do planm to do a lot of baby knitting this summer - a blanket a whack of bibs, and a sweater - a load of friends are all due in July and August!
My goals are:
-finish 3 matching crocheted headbands by June 27 (off to Cuba with 3 little girls that will look so cute on the beach together with their big flowered headbands!)
-finish 3 UFO's for my daughter! a twirly skirt, a tunic, a lace t-shirt
-co-knit a sweater with my co-worker (i'm knitting, she's watching and learning)
-start and finish the Diamond Fanatsy Shawl which I have started and frogged 3 times! (oh I'll get you right if it's the last thing I do!!)
I like this list thing. I've got to get knitting!
I have three baby projects I'm working on as gifts. Can't say what they are, because I believe the recipients may read your blog. :D
I also plan to make a pair of longies for Bronwyn before fall/winter gets here.
A fair isle baby hat, some sheep in sheep's clothing.... and the rest of my plans are crochet plans.
My goals are...
http://dayinthelifeof531.blogspot.com/2009/06/summer-knitting-goals.html
I'm going to post this list were I can see it...and I do intend to work a bit each day on these projects.
Ali,
How nice of you to let the list maker in me make up my Summer Knitting List...
I posted it on my blog today:
http://fabricnfiberfanatic.com/?p=317
It's going to be such FUN!
I just posted my list:
http://shepurls.blogspot.com/2009/06/summer.html
Bring it on, summer!
I'm a list-writer too - of course, when you forget the list (like I did today at the grocery store) it doesn't help too much :)
I just received a loaner spinning wheel from a friend, so I have hopes for some spinning and knitting hand spun yarn goals...
I'll be posting more on my blog soon - http://knitsinclass.blogspot.com
Oh, I've added "starting my own blog" onto my list of things to accomplish....but it's too far down the list for it to actually happen, it seems!!
My summer knitting goal is to seam and finish the 5 UFOs in my baskets. Baby sweater, two summer knits for me, a shawl that's almost done, and a cardi I lost interest in....I'm not allowing myself to start ANYTHING till this list is finished!!!
we'll see how this goes........
I would really love to succeed with my goals this summer for a change. I've posted a list at least ... now I have to get really committed to it. Turn over a new leaf so to speak. Okay ... I'm committed!
Wow, what great give-a-ways!! Well, I don't have a blog, but on my knitting list this summer are: a market bag out of hemp yarn, a baby blanket and hat for a shower gift, and learn how to make socks. That's it for starters :)
My summer knitting goals are to finish a bag I started and make more hats (while eating some form of chocolate of course!). I don't have a blog, but I hope I can still win! Thanks for doing this!
I am participating in the 52 pair plunge this year... one pair of socks each week.
So my list is: every week a pair of socks done in the summer
Start and finish a sweater for my two year old.
My summer goals include:
1) Knit stuffed animals (one pig and one duck) for my friends' birthdays)
2) Crochet a kippah for my student's Bar-Mitzvah (already have the supplies!)
3) Crochet a rug from my old torn bedsheet
4) Starting to card all of my yarn-y scraps back into spinnable fiber
5) Buy a wide-brimmed hat (unusually hard to find) so I can be out in the sun more

I've posted my midyear goals at Knit with KT. The biggie is to finish a wrap called Inconceivable (it's the model for a KAL on Ravelry and has to be done soon!). Thanks for prompting me to take a look at the year's list!
I'm not a blogger, but my summer knitting goal is to knit socks for at least three family members (including my aunt). I'm setting what should be a fairly easy knitting goal because my more important goal is to find a job.
ikkinlala AT yahoo DOT ca
My summer goals are to knit my cousin's wedding afghan and to complete a summer weight top. In my non-knitting life, my goal is to begin making lifestyle changes to get my acid reflux under control, and to start saving now that my debt is paid off!
Good idea to make a written list of knitting goals. I have one in my head, but tend to skip over #1 because I know it is going to take a lot of time and effort. Making the itty-bitty hats Ribbons hat for the swap has to be #1, but after that I must totally undo the back of a little boy's sweater :-( and start the sweater completely over in a larger size. The stitch pattern takes time and concentration (especially at first) so that may be all I'll accomplish this summer, but that would make me very happy!
I do not have a blog, but please do include me in your giveaway.
We gave up our car and started biking/taking the bus. It's summer now, but it will be fall and winter soon enough and I'm a very slow knitter. My goals are to make my husband and me a pair of bicycle ear warmers and my daughter a pair of warm wool mittens using the "lobster claw" kit from Morehouse Merinos. Keep your fingers crossed that I even get one done! sicilianbuttercup on Ravelry
i'm with you ali on lists! i had two people comment at stores this morning while running errands about my lists sticking out of my wallet every which way, without them though i cannot shut my brain down in the evening and sleep...so i list, and get a lot of things done because of their help!
This summer i am working on the girasole blanket (from loopy ewe knit along), finishing a lace cardi from french girl knits book, a tank from the tahki terra collection and a shawl from eco knits.i also have a dress waiting to be sewn from weekend sewing book, and a baby blanket knit after the lil devil design from the divorced, drunk and covered in cat hair book due by summers end. I am also trying to knit knit knit and get my etsy site back up and running as i am now semi retired...so some extra cash would be very nice! smile So finishing these goodies as well as canning and really getting the house in eco-order is my summer goal. (ps, ali, thank you so much for the wonderful package i received the other day!!)
Here are my summer knitting goals:
http://constantlyknitting.blogspot.com/2009/06/summer-knitting-goals.html
Great contest!
My summer goal is give socks another shot. I make one pair last summer but they were a little frustrating. I'm hoping to learn to do two at a time, toe-up. I'd also like to give cables a try for the first time this summer. And lace! Ok, looks like I have 3 major goals.
1. socks.
2. cables.
3. lace.
globalite on Ravelry
My knitting goals for this summer include a summer jacket and a laceweight scarf for me. Most of my knitting is for others. I also want to finish the 2 pair of socks on the needles.
Of course I keep getting sidetracked by new projects like a cute beach coverup for my girls and myself. Not too matchy though. LOL!
Wooo Hoooo, I have my goals listed on my blog. First is to finish my UFO's so then I can jump on all my other want to do knitting projects. I started my UFO completion project last week, but have added more want to do projects.
http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/psalm127
My goals are....
finish STR sock club socks that I'm behind on.
Learn lots of stuff at sock summit.
I've also joined a faery ring sweater KAL on ravelry that starts on July 1.
That's probably enough!
My goal is to get in alot more knitting time and to teach my dd, Nikki (6.5) to knit. She has been patiently waiting for over a year. My first thought is that she is too young but little ones have a way of not giving up on something they really want.
I believe she can learn to knit because she wants to knit with mom. I'll be sad when those days are gone and she's off on her own :-) My other goal is not to let the house, the perpetual pick up after the kids, the floors, laundry, and vegetable garden weeds...(the list could go on and on and on), take over my summer days. My specific knitting project list will be on my blog. Here's to knitting with your children! - Erin
My goodness..I just posted my list and I'm slightly intimidated by what I'd like to get done. I'll need some divine intervention, a bucket load of caffeine, and a daughter who can entertain herself. But all will be accomplished!!
And now, after reading the other comments, I feel like a whiner. But with 45 hours of work, full time college, a toddler, and a pregnancy...it's tough to find knitting time. Argh!!
Hopefully I win..I'd love some Blue Sky yarn..
Cheers,
A

My goal is to knit The Cap Shawl from Victorian Lace Today for my niece (the bride) to wear for her autumn wedding. I'm hoping the shawl becomes a family heirloom!

I'm blogless. I hope that doesn't eliminate my previous comment entry! Thanks for the giveaway!
My goals are a summer knit for each of my kids--a tank top for my oldest, a cotton dress for my 2nd, and a cute stuffed animal for my son.
I am blogless so read on...
I will finish my feather and fan cardigan that is currently banished to the corner for bad counting...
I will complete another pair of socks--possibly to gift to my cousin.
I will start my first lace project--one of 2 shawls in the Knitting in the Sun book.
Thanks!
Here are some of our goals for the summer...with kids in tow!http://stitchingunderoaks.blogspot.com/2009/06/settling-in.html
In the knitting department, I would also like to finish my started sweater (rusted root) and start an advent calendar. Thanks for the fun contest. I'm loving anything that has lists involved.
Yet another blogless one. I figure if I spent my time blogging, I'd have no time to read YOUR blog. Have priorities.
Speaking of priorities, my goal is to finish a sweater by the end of the summer. Something that will be nice for the fall.
my gmail is tomknit
I do have a blog, but ... it is hopeless, so here is my knitting goal:
I plan to finish at least one Hanne Falkenberg sweater over the summer. I have to admit I have more than one of them in some state of completion.
Great fun contest. I'd sure love to win one of the prizes.
The blogless ones are all coming out of the woodwork.
I do think of starting a blog, but then my gmail would not make much sense (bloglessinnj) so I will stay blogless and just leave my goals here.
I hope to knit a lace shawl this summer. I am so intimidated by the thought of blocking it, that I keep putting it off but this is the summer!
(if I win, and don't accomplish my goal, do I have to give back my prize - oh wait, that's not positive thinking)
Well, I am knitting blog-less..
so here are my knitting goals for summer.
1. Knit at least 2 lace shawls.
2. Start working on my first sweater
3. Make some more toys for my niece.. there are so many toys I would like to make her, and as she's going to be 6 - I suspect that she'll soon outgrow knitted toys.
RavID: WintersSong
My knitting goal for summer? Knit a lace shawl for my daughter who just graduated from college. She is selecting one and then I'm trying to get it done before she moves for her new job in the fall. We're both very pumped!
(and I don't have a blog - hangs head)
I also knit bloglessly.
My summer knitting goal is to design and knit a sweater. I've been looking through lots of books to get ideas. I love working with lots of color and want to do something with all of those hand painted sock yarns I have.
gmail - jerseyjessie
Wow - I always feel like I am such a slug for not have a blog, and now I see that I am definitely not alone. Knitting slugs unite!
My goal is to finish up all of those second socks by the end of the summer. You all know what I mean, don't you.
My hotmail address is dadofra
http://loisellendesigns.blogspot.com/
I need to print this list out and post it all over my house!!
Oh lists; oh goals. Oh setting oneself up for failure. Oh sigh. However, I really want to win so I will set me goal and really really try to finish them by the end of the summer.
I just got a book by Viv Hoxbro. I was to knit at least one shadow knitting project by the end of the summer. Hopefully a jacket.
Rav id - purple
I have many goals in knitting for this summer. 1st i want to finish the dog sweater I am knitting for my co-worker Autumn's little boy yorkie. I have promised my son to knit a scarf for winter to match the hat I knit him last winter- so I definitly need to accomplish that. (5year olds are great at reminding you that you need to complete projects.) I would like to start on a bath set for my sister in law for christmas and also start making some washclothes and dish towels for xmas gifts. So now all this is written down I guess I'm accountable for finishing it. Thanks for the motivation.
My main goal is to knit hats for my grandkids for Christmas - and I already have 2 out of 5 done. The other would be to finish my shawl and the socks I have 1/2 done so I can start another pair!
My summer knitting goal - go back to knitting after many years of not doing it. I'd like to jump in with a nice summer top. Maybe something in cotton or silk. There are so many beautiful yarns available now. I'd love to try them.
I hope that is not to amorphous for a goal - I haven't gone shopping for yarn yet, or maybe I'll win and have a boost in getting started.
gmail is weyuker
I'm also a big believer in lists, not least of all because I enjoy checking things off of them!
Here are mine:

I'm with you on making lists! love them!
thanks for the challenge and the inspiration to write down my summer knitting goals! happy knitting ali!

I'm putting my list up today.
My goals are going to mostly revolve around Summer of Socks 2009since this is my first year doing SOS. I want to learn to knit them toe up using different techniques - different toes, heels, designs, etc. I also want to knit a pair with my handspun.
My goals are to finish a pair of socks and 2 sweaters. Actually 4 sweaters, two of which are already on the needles.
Thanks for your wonderful give away opportunity.
New to your site and am enjoying it.
What a fun contest!! I posted my list here. http://barknknit.blogspot.com/2009/06/skien-her-ways-2009-summer-knitting.html
Good luck with your goals!
OK, I'm in - making a list 'een as we"speak" - my blog: http://rosevaleblog.blogspot.com/

I've listed my goals on my blog. Kept it pretty simple, although one is a whopper.
Hello, thank you for the motivation:)MY list is on my blog, have a great summer.

http://knittinginthenorth.typepad.com
Yay, I love your contest! You can read about my summer knitting goals here...

I'm blogless so my totally realistic goal is to knit Charlotte's Web.
hotmail - popofra
Lists are good. Thanks for making me sit down and think about mine.
http://thekitchentable.typepad.com/the_kitchen_table/2009/06/goals.html
I love a contest and I love having goals. I spend my summer away from my home and my stash so I have to think about what I'm taking with me and it forces me to set some goals.
This summer I plan on:
- Finishing my Annikki
- Start Inca Marl Coat
- Start and finish Tilted Duster
- Start Twisted V Pullover
Sounds like a lot but my Annikki is already to the sleeves.
My goal is only partly knitting - to finish and gift the socks that I just started for my mom, and to knit two baby sweaters for the twins a friend is having this fall. The other goal is to finally spin up the rest of the fiber that I bought at *last year's* Shepherd's Harvest (and, for me, that's a hefty goal).
I'm blog-less so here's my list:
~ finish my Kaibashira socks (I'm about 2/3 done with the first sock)
~ finish my Ashbury sweater (I'm just 2/3 done with the back so it has a looooong way to go)
~ finish my plain vanilla STR socks (the 2nd sock just needs the toe grafted and ends woven in)
~ knit a few baby knits (not sure exactly what yet but I've got 3 friends pregnant at the moment)
~ knit a pair of socks for my 2-yr-old
~ finish a sheep doll to take along to SS09!
Whoa that's a long list.... =/
My goal is humble - finish the pair of socks I'm working on. :)
I really need to finish the socks that are on the needles. It's my first attempt at toe up and I've stalled at turning the heel for the first one ~
Wouldn't mind getting a few premie hats done too....
I posted my goal list to my blog at
http://iluvrina.blogspot.com/ and I think it actually helps to put it down in writing even if I don't accomplish all that I hope for, I like that it's etched in stone somewhere. Thanks for your great blog!
~Michelle~
My list is in my projects list on rav, twins2005. I have a few Kal's upcoming, lace stoles & those are a few of my goals.
Thanks for the contest!
I've got a couple of stoles and of course socks on my summer projects list.
Plus I'd like to get a headstart on a few cowls for Christmas gifts.
So let's say: 3 stoles, 5 cowls and a few pairs of socks for me and my boys.
My goal (again) this year is to knit up my sock yarn stash. I am definitely feeling the need to be creative and this gives me an incentive! Thanks!
I'm joining the WIP Wrestlemania in Ravelry and trying to wrestle my pile of wips down to a more managable amount (currently the count is about 25). I'd consider the goal fullfilled if I by the end of summer only have 15 wips ;)
More particular, I have this stranded childrens sweater that I really don't want to celebrate it's 2 year anniversary as a wip... so that one gets priority ;)
I plan on knitting lots of shawls this summer it seems. And by lots, I only mean 3, though I've got a handful more in my queue on Ravelry... The 3 are the ones I must complete. I like making lists, but generally do not follow them. I really think I just like looking at my handwriting sometimes (how narcissistic!).
I don't have a blog, but I would still like to tell you my knitting goals. A waffle knit hat for Dad and brother, mate to mom's sock and another pair of socks, a pair of socks for my aunt, hats for my 2 girls, finish mitts for sister, a scarf and calomemtery(sp) to match my coat, a gingerbread doll for mil,a 3D star for tree topper, and random socks for me to match some of my sweaters. I have some pretty lofty goals, but I hope I can get them done well before the end of fall.

I like to think about and plan knitting as much as I like to knit. I re-hash my knitting goals regularly. I'll head to my blog now and allocate a few of my goals for summer. Come check me out.

I'm trying to KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid as I know it's going to be a busy one so my summer knitting goals are:
- two baby somethings, for two pregnant friends
- a cushion cover of my own design
- three pairs of socks
- finish the cardigan on the go and start the next one
- finish a UFO from the Basket o' Doom
- a throw
In that order of priority, too! Anything else is a bonus...
I just stumbled upon your blog!
I noted some goals in my blog. (http://bindingoff.blogspot.com)
#1. Finish the pair of socks that has been on my needles wayyy to long.
#2. Knit the "Beach Glass" shawl by Susan Lawrence (have the pattern & need to get my yarn).
#3. I am learning to weave so work a little more on that.
Blogless, Donna S (too boring for a blog-that's whats wrong with me!!)
I just posted my list on my blog! Thanks for organizing us all into making goal lists! I love checking things off of lists. it gives me such a sense of accomplishment!
http://craftalittle.com
~learn the crochet stich for my moms new blanket.
~knit a pair of socks
~knit each of my children an item. twin tops, a toy for my son,
~finish a pair of gloves for me.
I think this is a great idea. Here are my summer goals. I love to make lists.

My summer goals are:

Thanks for doing this!! I really hope I can get this all done!
Take care!!
-Tanya
I plan to conquer my first lace shawl, out of sockweight. Also want to knit down some of my sock stash. I am abroad this summer in South American, so I want to visit with some local spinners and weavers. More goals will develop I am sure. blog at: http://beltwayspinner.blogspot.com
